Maybe it’s because I didn’t date a lot in high school or college (my longest dating “relationship” prior to meeting Mark was just 3 months!), but I’ve never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. My parents would always give me cards and candy, and while I enjoyed the grammar school tradition of passing out valentines to the entire class, I otherwise “celebrated” quietly by wearing goofy, heart-patterned socks.
Throughout our dating relationship, engagement, and marriage, Mark and I have continued to give each other a card with a sweet, personal message scrawled inside; in fact, we still have the first cards we gave each other after just 5 months of dating, back in 2006. We’ve gone out to a nice dinner or cooked at home a time or two, but we never spend a lot of money commemorating this much-too-commercial holiday. I think my birthday falling 4 days prior may have something to do with it as well!
This year we’ll have dinner in Epcot; while we’ll probably exchange cards, I think a week-long trip to Florida is more than a perfect gift for each of us this year!
Since I’ve recently discovered a love tolerance of fitness, I’ve put together a list of mostly inexpensive Valentine’s Day Gifts for the Fitness Lover.
1) Wrist wallet
This one size fits most Banjees polyspandex wallet is $15.00 and comes in a variety of colors and patterns.
2) Pedometer
This Omron HJ-112 Pocket Pedometer has received excellent reviews for its accuracy and has an affordable $34.99 list price.
3) iTunes gift card
Spend as much as you’d like and allow your significant other to create a brand new workout playlist.
4) Dumbbell set
For light weights, try this 20-lb set for $29.10. It includes pairs of 2-lb, 3-lb, and 5-lb weights and a tidy storage stand.
5) Headbands
Though a bit pricey at $12.00-$15.00, I’ve heard these Bic Bands stay put throughout the toughest workouts.
6) Yoga mat
This Gaiam yoga mat is an affordable $21.98 and comes in a variety of colors. Reviewers have given it 4 out of 5 stars.
7) Monogrammed towel
Personalize a gym towel with your significant other’s initials or workout mantra. Check out Pinterest or Etsy for inspiration.
8) Re-usable water bottle
Something like this BPA-free plastic CamelBak ($15.00) is an inexpensive alternative to packaged bottled water and a necessity for athletes on the go.
9) Display for race bibs/medals
Use your imagination on this one. Running on the Wall (Etsy shop) has a wonderful selection if you’re not crafty enough to make your own. These displays would be perfect to showcase a race you’ve run together or if he/she recently achieved a personal record.
10) Fitness classes
I’d recommend this gift if your significant other has already expressed interest in signing up for a class (otherwise you wouldn’t want to offend him/her). Pure Barre, CrossFit, and Bikram Yoga studios are scattered throughout most of the country and are programs I’d love to try, personally, if I had both the time and money.
