A couple months ago, my in-laws were in town and offered to watch Baby M while the husband and I had a “day date.” Since we weren’t feeling any of our go-to favorites and I’d recently heard an advertisement for The House, we decided to check out this new(ish) restaurant for brunch.
The House is located in the back of a quaint shopping area in the Spring Hill community (near our alma mater, Spring Hill College). Once upon a time it was a cute British pub, but when the owners shut it down to enjoy their own retirement, The House was born.
To begin: a Bloody Mary for both of us.
These were decent, but we both thought they needed an extra kick of pepper.
We both wanted eggs, but we also loved the sound of the Bananas Foster French Toast, so we opted to split 2 entrees.
Because we arrived 30 minutes before closing (don’t hate us!), they were out of hash browns and some omelet fillings (like spinach), so we shared an omelet with white cheddar, bacon, and sundried tomatoes. It came with a side of grits and a biscuit.
The omelet was cooked perfectly to our liking—though a little salty thanks to our choice in fillings. The grits were cheesy and had sort of a whipped texture. I liked them, but they weren’t Mark’s favorite.
The French toast was quite delicious. It had a nice cinnamon taste but could’ve used a few more seconds on the griddle (I like most of the soft, custardy texture to be cooked away, I’m weird). The rum sauce was sweet but not overpowering, and the bananas, which were served cold rather than warmed, joined chopped pecans for a nice finishing touch.
I often feel like brunch is hit or miss here in Mobile. Some of the more well-known places (Café 615 and Spot of Tea) are just mediocre in my book. This brunch was not extraordinary, but it was good—we almost cleaned the plates—and priced well for what was offered.
I’d like to return for dinner since they label themselves as having Creole and Cajun flair and offer some tantalizing seafood dishes. Perhaps we’ll try it out if another date night is on the books.
