Woohoo, it’s (almost) the weekend! I feel like I begin these Friday posts a lot more cheerfully than my others—wonder why? 😉
So, this morning I don’t have too much to chat about, so let’s go ahead and jump into Top 3 Friday.
Top 3 Eats
1) Crab Cake Eggs Benedict // If you read Tuesday’s post, then you know all about our Sunday brunch at Five. If not, let me tell you about this awesome dish: the crab cakes were packed with delicious lump crab meat and delicately seasoned, the poached eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise was refreshingly light and tangy. I can’t wait to go back.
2) Turkey meatloaf and roasted broccoli and cauliflower // I know meat loaf is NOT a pretty food (hence why there’s no picture?) and doesn’t really sound all that appealing, but to me, it’s a comfort food. This one was particularly yummy, and the roasted veggies on the side were tasty, too. Is there a vegetable that doesn’t taste good roasted? I’ve yet to discover one.
3) Avocado toast // As mentioned on Instagram, I couldn’t decide between sweet or savory, so I did what any smart person would do—I ate both. One slice of toast included avocado slices, salt, pepper, lemon juice and crushed red pepper, the other included mashed avocado, a drizzle of honey, and fresh raspberries. Perfection.
Top 3 Lows
1) I’m still nursing a cold // I don’t cough during the day much, but it hits me at night (of course). And the last couple of days I’ve been sneezing like crazy. Hopefully continued use of the NetiPot and some R&R this weekend will nip it in the bud.
2) Arguing with the husband // I don’t like to get extremely personal on here, but the other night we got into a little argument. I said some hurtful things, and now I feel terrible about it. You guys, marriage can be hard. Sometimes, especially when a kid is involved, you just get one another’s nerves. And, sometimes, you just don’t feel like talking. Luckily Mark and I have a strong marriage. We both take our commitment to each other seriously (if we didn’t, why marry in the first place?), and we try not to stay mad at each other. Both of us could work on communication (he could open up more, and I could not be so quick to jump on the defensive), but at the end of the day (or the next morning), we talk things out and try again. We are two imperfect people who are better together than we are separately.
3) My new shoes gave me blisters // Once again I’m struggling to come up with “lows” which isn’t a bad thing! Anyway, I randomly bought some black wedge shoes at TJMaxx the other day hoping they were comfortable enough and low enough for work. They are—except I need to break in the strap across the toes before I do too much walking. Ouch.
Top 3 Highs
1) My wonderful mother // Today is my mom’s birthday! I hope she has a fantastic day, and I’m so grateful for all the support she’s given me over the years. I couldn’t imagine not having a positive relationship with my parents.
2) No more writer’s block // After taking a bit of a blogging “break” for most of last week, I sort of found myself in a bit of a writing funk. Luckily I had some ideas spring up, so now I won’t be sporadically posting or sharing inane bits of rambling (unless that’s what I’m always doing?).
3) Sunny days // After a rainy weekend, we had abundant sunshine this week. The heat was almost unbearable, but at least it was pretty!

Hands // Coffee and Crumbs // Not going to lie, that made me a little misty-eyed.

So tell me…
- What are your plans for the weekend?
- What was your top 3 [pick a category] this past week?
Ellie says
My plans for the weekend are to continue to plan the next few months of my life, work and enjoy the weather. My top 3 foods from this week is rice, rice and more rice hahaha I’m just loving it 🙂
Catherine says
I feel like I go through phases with rice – but when cooked the right way, it can be quite tasty! Have a great weekend!
Lyss says
Avocado toast is the best! So sorry you got into an argument with your husband. 🙁 Also in need of some warm sunny days! The weather has been iffy in MA. My plans for the weekend include working and a grad party. Have a great weekend Catherine! Hope your not coming down with a cold either. <3 xoxo
Catherine says
A grad party sounds fun! I hope you get some warm, sunny weather in MA soon. Have a great weekend, Lyss!
Marina says
I have to try eggs benedict now! I’ve always been so-so about hollandaise sauce but crab is soooo good. 🙂 My plans for the weekend include seeing a friend for a concert tomorrow night and hopefully getting some brunch on Sunday! Haha I hope you have a great weekend! <3
Catherine says
Thanks, Marina. Hope you get that brunch, girl! And have fun seeing your friend and going to your concert.

So, I’m thankful for your honesty Catherine. We are all imperfect people, and we’re a work in progress. Also, I just love sunshine especially after rain. I think I may appreciate it more. Happy Birthday to your sweet mom! Oh boy, and I know writer’s block. Sometimes, I have an idea, but my brain is totally blank as to how to write it.
Catherine says
When I get writer’s block, I often read the news (or “news-like” websites, haha) to get ideas. I try my best to be honest on here without revealing too many personal things (for somebody with a public blog, I’m actually a private person!).
Kate Bennett says
Thank you for sharing the bit about your marriage. We all have arguments but what counts is that we can work them out! They certainly reveal more about us than we’d like sometimes, but I know they teach us a lot too.
Happy birthday to your mom- moms really are the best!
Catherine says
Definitely, Kate. I feel like, on the whole, we don’t argue very often. Usually it’s me getting all bent out of shape over something stupid – which, as you say, reveals more about ME than Mark.
Morgan says
Ugh I hope you feel better soon! Ryan has a gross cold and I just KNOW I’m going to get it.. #momlife. And your arguments sound exactly like my husband and mine. I’m definitely the defensive one, he’s definitely the quiet one.
Catherine says
Thanks, Morgan. Yeah, anytime my son gets sick, I just go ahead and pencil in sick time for myself. So it goes…
Kristy @ Southern In Law says
Avocado toast is always a winner for me! Especially if the toast is supeeeeeeeeeer crunchy.
I hope you’re feeling better really really soon!
Catherine says
Yes – crunchy toast + creamy avocado = perfection. 🙂
