Woohoo—it’s time for a long weekend! For a lot of us anyway (I hope you’re among the ones who are off work for the 4th).
This week had its ups and downs, but I’m happy that Friday is here and that my in-laws are visiting for the holiday. We don’t have too much on the agenda, so I hope there will be lots of relaxation and sleep to go around.
In the meantime, let’s have a look at this last week in our usual threes. Hope everybody has a safe and happy weekend!
Top 3 Eats
Split Pea Lettuce Wraps from Thug Kitchen // I don’t have a photo (split peas will never win “most photogenic” for their senior class), but trust me when I say these were delicious (and messy)! Mark and I had a heavy lunch, so these were the perfect light dinner. Adding shredded chicken or something fattier on the side would have made these even more filling.
BLATs // Only the best sandwich ever. Bacon, lettuce, tomato, and AVOCADO. I devoured this thing after BodyPump. Nary a crumb was left on the plate. (Got to love the random nail polish remover pen hanging out in the background; our dining room table is a mess!)
Chickpea Curry Soup // This was slightly modified from the Top Chef Quick Fire cookbook, but it was pretty tasty! I think we’ll add it to our soup rotation.
Top 3 Lows
Stuffy nose // For somebody who used to be so healthy, I feel like I’m always “sick-ish.” I blame the babe and his daycare germs. I’m not feeling badly per se, but my nose has been stuffy (or runny) the last couple of days. Luckily it eased up yesterday and hasn’t troubled me so far today.
Locking myself out of the house & car // Oops. I was about 30 minutes late for work (thank goodness for retired parents with spare keys who are willing to drive to my house to let me in!) but the world didn’t end. I found humor in it and enjoyed my coffee while pacing around my yard and chatting with our neighbor. #MomBrainIsReal
Letting things stress me out at work // Honestly, I’d say I’m lucky to have a relatively stress-free job; however, sometimes little things happen (usually all at once) that make me freak out. I just need to take it all in stride and realize that the world isn’t going to end if I can’t answer a question or make a mistake. Seriously.
Top 3 Highs
Good sleep // Maybe it’s because we’ve been staying up slightly later (watching OITNB), but I’ve slept like a rock this week. I wish it was longer, but hey, I’ll take good sleep for however long I can get it!
Free lunch at work // I know there’s technically no such thing as a free lunch (shout out to my 12th grade economics teacher!), but Wednesday was my company’s “employee appreciation day.” They had a few food trucks on campus and we received a ticket for a free lunch. I went with shrimp & grits and jambalaya (they were ok) and ended the day with a watermelon kona ice (they also had ice cream sandwiches and cones).
Hugs and kisses from Bazooka // Have I mentioned before how great little man is at giving out hugs and kisses when prompted? It’s the sweetest thing, although his kisses are sometimes more of a head-butt than an actual kiss. He’ll get there. <3

Venting vs. Complaining // Carla Birnberg // This is spot on. While I’ve been stuck in the negative cycle of complaining before (and possibly will again), I think venting is a completely different animal that brings catharsis and, sometimes, clarity. We all need to vent sometimes!
Do You Believe In Yourself? // Talk Less, Say More // Guilty. I don’t always believe in myself, but what’s to lose by trying? Negativity is a guarantee for failure, but belief is a positive force and half of the journey.
The Kind of Mom I Want To Be // SuzLyfe // This is so beautiful and heart-felt. I feel the same way about my own desire to be a good mother.

FREE lunch at work? That sounds like an amazing perk. And kisses from Bazooka? :))) You have the sweetest family. Yay for a long, restful weekend. I hope that much of your stress starts to dissipate over the weekend. 🙂 I’m thanking the Lord for REST. <3
Catherine says
Thanks Emily <3
I really do have the sweetest family – even if we all get on each other's nerves sometimes. 😉

And good sleep is such a gift, isn’t it? Some nights, I stay up and can’t sleep, and I think I appreciate the days I can sleep so much more after those nights. :'( Do you think you have allergies with the stuffy nose? Sometimes that’s something I get when there’s a lot of pollen.
Catherine says
Yes! I used to take sleeping late for granted (I hated it, actually, because I felt like I was missing out on the day) but now I WISH I could sleep for 10+ hours “just because.”
I think the pollen probably is part of my stuffy nose – that, and a really old building at work. 🙁
SuzLyfe says
Aw, thank you so much for sharing my post. I am with you on being locked out–it is the worst. I have a phobia of leaving my house without keys especially now that we live in a place where I can’t easily get a spare. I make my husband show me his keys before we leave the house each time! Have a great weekend, Catherine!
Catherine says
You’re welcome – it was a great post.
That’s really smart – I should start doing that (especially since my husband locked himself out the other night while taking out the trash; I was bathing Bazooka and couldn’t let him in and of course I got all mad).Have a great weekend, too, Susie!

During the winter I have the “post-run sniffles” so I blow my nose through eating breakfast, but once I shower they leave. It’s like I’m “sick” for two hours or so a day =P
I love the venting/complaining post. I think venting is something that is helpful for emotional health. Complaining really gets nothing done.
Catherine says
Ha, that’s strange – but I could definitely handle just a 2-hour sickness. 🙂
I really loved that venting post, too! But I love everything Carla posts, really.

Thank goodness for your parents! Don’t worry, I’m always used to having someone at home, however, lately I’ve been the only one home and would have locked myself out if I didn’t have a key lock box outside because I am known to walk out without my keys hahaha!
Catherine says
Haha, we need to invest in one of those boxes! Or something.
Yes, my parents are a god-send – with the key incident *and* when we have a sick baby and need to go into work. Have a great weekend, Kristy!
Lyss says
Yay for free lunch and free things in general! Hope your stuffy nose clears up. That is never fun 🙁 Have a great fourth of July weekend with your fam Catherine! xoxo
Catherine says
Thank you, Lyss. Hope you have a lovely 4th of July, too!
