If I had one word to describe the last couple of weeks, it would be: busy.
I’ve mentioned before how I don’t like the way our society glorifies the notion of busy, but sometimes, even I get caught up in obligations and other commitments.
Busy isn’t necessarily a bad thing, unless you come to the startling realization that I did. I was so thirsty on the way home from picking up dinner and cake for Mark’s birthday and I realized that I had been so preoccupied all day at work that I had forgotten to drink water.
How do you forget to drink water?!
I mean, I still drank some water, but I had only filled up my water bottle once during the day.
As I mentioned earlier this month, I am partnering with Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water and participating in their #SparklingDetox Challenge.
If you’re unfamiliar, Gerolsteiner is the world’s number 1 sparkling mineral water. Since I started drinking Gerolsteiner, I’ve become a huge fan of its simple and refreshing taste. I have been enjoying it alongside my healthy breakfasts and drinking it in the evenings after work.
Anyway, as I pondered how busy I’ve been at work lately, I started thinking about more than just taking time to enjoy sparkling mineral water.
We—myself included—are guilty of overlooking so many things!
How often do we wake up early to enjoy a hot mug of coffee and read the newspaper (ok, our tablets) or watch the sunset?
How quick are we to “hush!” our children when we’re listening to a news segment or “shoo!” our beloved pets when they just want companionship?
How common is it for you to rush through your dinner so quickly that you barely even tasted your food?
I hate, hate, HATE to admit this, but my husband and I (who both work outside of the home 8-5, mind you) spend more time staring at our phone and/or computer screens in the evenings than we do talking or reading books.
We are missing so many opportunities to connect and enjoy the little things in our lives!
I’m going to make a promise, and I hope you’ll do the same.
For the next few weeks, I promise to be mindful of the little things. I’m going to make sure I drink plenty of water, of course, but I’m going to make an effort to move more slowly through the day and appreciate the simple joys that occur.

So tell me…
- How do you remind yourself to drink enough water? Any special tricks?
- In what ways do you make sure to practice mindfulness?
Ellie says
I try to practice mindfulness with daily prayer. I am actually in a constant state of prayer especially now that I find I am anxious about the future and a bit unsure of things. Drinking water is something I forget to do if I don’t have a cup, so I always keep my cup with me.
Catherine says
I hope you find some peace about your future.
I always keep my cup nearby, too 🙂

So true though. Often my flatmates will all sit around the table staring at their phones and if you don’t join in it feels incredibly awkward. It is sad that we are missing out on some of the beauty of life because of our business.
Catherine says
Yes! I am bad about it, but I find myself being the odd woman out sometimes in social settings when I’m NOT on my phone.
Alyssa says
I always carry around my reusable water bottle. That in itself helps remind me to keep drinking water!!
Catherine says
Yes! Having a water bottle with you definitely helps – as long as there is somewhere to fill it up 🙂

I’m terrible for drinking water, just terrible! I can literally go all day and then realize all I’ve drank is a cup of coffee. And I know how much more water I should be drinking now that I’m pregnant! It’s not that I don’t like water…I think it’s more that I don’t like having to pee every 15 minutes 😉 And I just forget. My husband and I are bad for catching up on things on our phones in the evening too. And I even like to “multitask” while we are watching a show together, but we try to have a “no cell phones” rule during that time.
Catherine says
So I am really behind on blog reading, but I just saw that you’re pregnant again – congrats! I don’t know what made me different (not having a toddler already? 😉 ) but I had no trouble drinking water when I was pregnant. I like your “no cell phones” rule. We need to implement that, too, even if it means plugging our phones in inside our bedroom and leaving them there!
