This Blueberry Ginger Bourbon Smash featuring Coopers’ Craft Bourbon and Ale-8-One ginger soda is the perfect, refreshing drink for spring and summertime!
So, did you guys survive April Fools’ Day?
We survived just fine because there were no pranks pulled. It’s not that we’re ambivalent toward practical jokes, it’s more because we’re not very creative.
I did get to test my creativity out in other ways, though. Namely, this surprisingly delicious blueberry ginger bourbon smash!
I’ve mentioned before that I’m generally a wine or beer girl (hard liquor is just too…hard…for me these days), but I think I’m slowly becoming a bourbon fan.
Coopers’ Craft bourbon, that is.
Recently I was sent a bottle of Coopers’ Craft Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Ale-8-One to try.
Ale-8-One is a sweet, ginger-flavored soda. It’s not something I’d drink on the regular, but when paired with bourbon, it’s quite delicious.
Coopers’ Craft is distilled and bottled in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s aged in oak barrels that are raised and “toasted” especially for the Coopers’ Craft bourbon.
I wouldn’t call myself a whiskey connoisseur, but I definitely could taste the oak undertones and well as the light spice and fruitiness of the bourbon.
I may not be ready to sip it straight, but I love the way it pairs with Ale-8-One an blueberries in this Blueberry Ginger Bourbon Smash.
Blueberry Ginger Bourbon Smash
serves 1; easily doubled, tripled, etc.
Ingredients
- ¼ cup blueberries*
- 2-3 shakes Angostura bitters
- ¼ tsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1 tsp maple syrup**
- 1.5 oz Coopers’ Craft bourbon
- 3 to 4 oz Ale-8-One ginger soda
- ice
Directions
- Add blueberries to the bottom of a rocks glass and “smash” together with the bitters, maple syrup, and grated ginger.
- Top with ice (mine sort of melted) and add the bourbon and ginger soda.
- Garnish with extra blueberries and drink up.
Note:
*Fresh blueberries will work nicely, but if you use frozen (as I did), be sure to defrost in the microwave for 30 seconds or so.
**I did not measure the maple syrup, but when I eye-balled it, my drizzle looked to be around a teaspoon. Feel free to sweeten to taste. You may not even need sweetener depending on how fresh and in season your berries are.
I have never used blueberries in a drink, but this worked incredibly well! The ginger soda and grated ginger add a spicy bite to the sweetness of the berries, and both pair nicely with the bourbon. It’s the perfect spring and summer drink.

YUM!!! This sounds delicious! I love making fun cocktails. I’m not a huge bourbon person, but with all the other flavors, I would love it. Just can’t do straight up, or old fashioned style drinks!

Thanks, Corrine. I’m still getting used to the flavor of bourbon, but I can tell this one is good! 🙂
