Every year around this time I share a post centered on ways to enjoy the holiday season. I’m back again, and I hope my tips are a familiar and welcomed refrain instead of a redundancy.
Because, like it or not, we all get caught up in the frenzy of the holidays. And we sometimes fall prey to our personal insecurities, judgments, anxieties, and expectations.
That’s why I think it’s important to take a moment to slow down, reflect, show ourselves grace, and make an effort to be mindful and grateful for this time.
I may be writing these words for you all to read, but each and every point noted below is directed toward myself as well—trust me!
Tips for Enjoying the Holidays This Year
1. Be present
One way we are being more present this year is by having our Christmas tree in the main “living” area as opposed to the formal space we rarely ventured into. Last year, it felt like we barely got to enjoy the holiday spirit because we never spent time gazing at our beautifully-decorated tree.
Instead of trying to photograph or “document” every single holiday experience, just focus on BEING there. Practice mindfulness so you enjoy each moment before they fade away.
2. Give without expectation
Of course we all consider gift-giving to be integral to the holiday season, but I’m not necessarily talking about presents. Give with your time. Your ears. Your smiles. Your extra tips for a good massage or meal.
Give to those who truly need it. Whether you adopt an Angel Tree child or toss your change into the Salvation Army kettle, give with your heart and without the expectation of recognition or something material in return.
I plan to do this as much as possible.
3. Keep your schedule open
There’s nothing more stressful than an overbooked holiday season! I made this mistake a few years ago—and when rain or sickness ruined our plans, I was so upset.
This year I plan to keep our schedule open. There are some nonnegotiable holiday events and activities (city tree lighting!) we’ll take part in, but I like the idea of leaving room for spontaneous gatherings or just enjoying a holiday movie and mug of hot chocolate.
4. Eat the foods you enjoy
It really saddens me to hear people discuss their diets at holiday gatherings, but I get it. When there are cakes, pies, candies, cheesy dips and carbs at every turn, it can be stressful if you’re trying to lose weight or adopt a healthier lifestyle.
I believe, however, that these indulgences have their place in ALL healthy diets, and I think avoiding or demonizing these foods will create undue stress, lead to binges and unhealthy habits, and suck the joy out of our celebrations.
Instead of fighting it, make space on your plate for treats and try not to beat yourself up if you “overdo” it.
5. Save room for self-care and decompressing
As mentioned above, the holidays are a time for giving, but it’s entirely possible to give too much of ourselves.
Sometimes spending too much time with family or colleagues can wear on our patience, so it’s absolutely understandable and necessary to take time out for ourselves.
Keep up your exercise schedule (but don’t overdo it). Treat yourself to some relaxation while treating others. Or just know when to back down from an invitation or leave a party early if you’re exhausted or anxious.
As the old adage says, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.”

I wish you all good health, quality time with loved ones, and abundant joy during this season.
So tell me…
- What is your number one tip for enjoying the holidays?
- Do you have any non-negotiable events or traditions you take part in?

I’m so with you on the overbooking. I have gotten so stressed out and tired from saying yes to every party and event and ended up being more stressed than having fun. I think starting fun little traditions with my family is a way to enjoy the holidays without it being stressful. We are doing an advent calendar with Aubrey this year, she helps me bake Christmas goodies, and my mom gets her new pjs on Christmas Eve 🙂
