Did you all know that March is Women’s History Month?
To draw attention to the significance of this month and to honor the many inspiring, talented, and beautiful women I know and love, I thought I’d highlight some of my favorite podcasts—hosted BY women and (largely) FOR women.
This list is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to inspirational and educational content produced by women, and I hope you will share your own favorites in the comments.
5 Incredible Podcasts Hosted by Women
1. The Imperfect Couch
Janelle Dawsey and Oprah Zeon are two Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Georgia, and their primary focus is, in their own words, “bridging the gap between Christianity and mental health.”
While they do center their episodes on faith and close out each episode with a prayer, I don’t find their discussions to be alienating if you’re not a Christian or person of faith. And, as practicing therapists, they certainly don’t perpetuate the misguided “just pray away your depression/anxiety/etc.” mentality, which is incredibly damaging to those living with mental illness.
Janelle and Oprah sound so natural in front of the microphone, and I look forward to following their journey. And the name “Imperfect Couch?” It’s perfect for a therapist-hosted podcast about humanity, faith, and our imperfect journeys.
2. As a Woman
Dr. Natalie Crawford is a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist practicing in Austin, Texas. Her podcast is a much-needed result of her medical practice, experience as a mother of two young children, a desire to squash gender bias within the medical industry, and a calling to inspire and empower women in all aspects of life.
I also follow Dr. Crawford’s Instagram, and I was immediately drawn to her positivity and commitment to educating women to become advocates for themselves.
3. FemmSouth
FemmSouth is a local (to the Alabama Gulf Coast) podcast hosted by two women, Leigh Bancroft and Amaya James.
While Leigh grew up in the Deep South, Amaya is originally from California, so it’s interesting to hear their differing perspectives. I enjoy the format of the podcast: first they review a feminist author’s book—discussing the themes and relevance of the book in today’s world—and, in part 2, they conduct interviews based on some of those previously discussed themes.
The role of feminism in the Deep South needs to be explored. With so many anti-progressive traditions and a history of succumbing to narrowly focused gender roles, feminism’s relevance and reputation are misunderstood. These ladies are working to clear the air and prove why these discussions are necessary.
4. On Being
The first episode of On Being I listened to was an interview with Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle (an author and advocate whom I adore), and I was immediately hooked. Next I listened to the Elizabeth Gilbert (you guys know I’m a Big Magic fan) episode and became even more engaged.
Krista Tippett has a gift as a podcast curator and host, and I look forward to exploring her archives even further. It seems there is something for everyone with a wide variety of topics and respected personalities.
5. Mind Body Musings
I’ve been following Maddy Moon for years now (and have written about her podcast before), and I enjoy Mind Body Musings because it offers a diverse assortment of interviews—ranging from body image, crystal healing, navigating relationships, managing debt, launching a small business, understanding the balance of masculinity and femininity, resisting the diet mentality, and anything else you could imagine.
She’s practically built an empire, and I love how encouraging her platform is to women of all shapes, sizes, belief systems, and stages in life.
One day I hope to attend one of her wellness retreats. <3
